10 Best Things to Do in Idaho Falls during the Winter

Winter in Idaho Falls is cold and often snowy, but that doesn’t mean you need to confine yourself to the indoors. There’s plenty of outdoor recreation to be found, too.

Whether you’re new to the area, visiting, or thinking about a long-term relocation, we have some ideas about how to spend your time here when the temperature drops. Check out the 10 best things to do in Idaho Falls during the winter

1. Hit the Slopes

Great cross country skiing can be found at places like Freeman Park and Tautphaus Park. Bring your own equipment or rent what you need. For thrill seekers who like the fast pace and adrenaline rush of downhill skiing, head to Kelly Canyon Ski Resort. It’s less than half an hour away from Idaho Falls and also popular with snowboarders.

2. Soak Up the Hot Springs

The air may have an unforgiving chill, but the warm waters await at the Bonneville Hot Springs in the Boise National Forest. Goldbug Hot Springs are also available if you don’t mind the two-mile hike into Salmon-Challis National Forest.

3. Visit the Museum of Idaho

Science exhibits, hands-on interactive classes and cultural explorations are available at the Museum of Idaho, a great place to spend a winter day. There’s a discount for students and military personnel and SNAP/Idaho Food Stamp recipients only have to pay $1 to get in. We think that’s pretty cool.

4. Art Museum of Eastern Idaho

If fine art is more your thing, you’ll want to visit the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho, where there are permanent collections as well as rotating exhibits. You’ll also get to see the work of local and emerging artists in contemporary, inviting galleries.

5. Take a Sleigh Ride

There’s plenty of snow in the winter, which invites sleds and sleigh rides. At Mountain River Ranch, you can enjoy a sleigh ride as well as dinner and a show.

6. Spend some time Ice Fishing

Plenty of lakes and ponds are found throughout Idaho Falls and perfect for ice fishing. If you’ve never done it before, it’s the same as summertime fishing. Just don’t forget your thermos of hot coffee or tea and an auger to break through the ice.

7. Idaho Falls Temple

The Idaho Falls Temple is at the Visitors Center and an impressive structure regardless of your faith or background. Visit for the views of the Snake River, the outdoor gardens, and the peaceful vibe.

8. Do some Ice Skating

The Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena is the most popular place for ice skating in Idaho Falls, but if you prefer outdoor ice, head to Mel Erickson Sunnyside Park or the Tautphaus Elk Pasture.

9. Winter Walking at Tautphaus Park

Winter months are good times to enjoy empty trails at Tautphaus Park. Take a leisurely stroll along the plowed trails and enjoy the snow banks and icy trees. Trails are groomed weekly to ensure conditions are safe.

10. See the Snake River Greenbelt

See the Snake River Greenbelt

A perfect and meditative place for adults, dogs, and children, the Greenbelt weaving along the Snake River is an ideal way to enjoy the winter afternoon sunshine.

These are things we like to do in the winter, when we’re not hibernating with a good book or a binge-worthy Netflix series. If you’d like to hear more about the area and the opportunities here, please contact us at Jacob Grant Property Management.
